A once in a life time camp…
Camp cameron ~ Give me life in Thy ways. Psalm 119:37
A 3 weeks camp which i will never never regret going. Organized by FES for all uni students all over malaysia.
(One big family in front of chalet 9)
Pre camp…
- Anxiety, nervous. I dont know anyone at all who would be going up from kl? Scary.
- What to pack ah for a 3 weeks camp?
- What camp would it be? would it be fun? No internet, tv (my daily endless dramas), movies, shopping mall, family? Can i survive?
- Away from the world and my comfort zone for 3 weeks????
Camp
- The journey was good. Made many new friends
- Realised wah i got such a huge family suddenly. 21 of us with 2 grandma, 2 grandpa, 2 aunties, 1 papa, 1 mama and 14 childrens…haha
(Chalet 8 family on traditional night. Grandma karyn& Aunty shelby missing)
- Ha? The toilet cannot flush toilet paper. Oh no …formore must be shared by the whole family
- Why must get up so early everyday..before 7am for devotion??? and sleep by 12pm…so early???
- Wah so many people are actually studying medicine too….haha
- Sabbath day again… (every sun)…alone with God for 7 hours. Never kept so silent before for so many hours but its truly beautiful when you hear God’s voice speaking to you and admire His beautiful creation.
- Vege vege..lots of vege….nvr love vege…but didnt had a choice in cameron
- Everyday must write journal..help! i am not a writing person.
- Outing…bus 11! Walked up to boh tea for dunno how many km. To tanah rata, we had to try to hitch a ride up. Suddenly felt so poor when i had to hitch a ride..haha
(Up at Boh tea. Bus 11 all the way up was really a good exercise. Thank God for the nice weather)
Post camp
- I miss camp and early morning devotion!! Everyone there and the peaceful environment. Away from the hectic, busy, distracting and rat race life/ world.
- I miss the cooling nice weather..waking up everyday to the mother nature…kl weather is melting me. Should consider working in cameron next time.Live longer.
-I really miss my family…my chalet 8 cafe family. All our night family sharing and prayer, jokes and laughter..learning to love and care for one another as one happy family.
- Learned how to live in a large family (21 in a family) with everyone unique in their own way
(My family. Steven from sarawak (in white cap) is the family’s youngest son and joker. Always bringing laughter to everyone with his actions and jokes)
- No more camp…no more exercise…no more line dancing..no more outdoor games..haha..back to hibernating…Zzzz…
- It refreshed me once again on redeeming my relationship with self, God, friends, family and world. Learning to be still before God and listen for His voice. My mission in campus. Just too many things to share on here…oh bible study can be really really intesting too
- Oh i love vege now..hehe 3 weeks camp with lots of vege everyday as our main dish trainned me well to love vege now..my friends and family would be very proud of me..hahaha…:P
- All in all, camp cam really taught me alot. Initially was very reluctant to go for a 3 weeks camp, but now if i am given a chance, i would want to join it again!!!! too bad for camp cam, you can only join it once
Camp cam…
My bustop for 3 weeks …
Time to move on and face the real world..
My next destination???
Kuala Terengganu in 2 weeks time. My new home for the next 3 years. Counting the days left to enjoy the comfort of home and life in kl. Will definitely miss kl life
(Me and Sis Ervinna. We love camp cam..haha..its not a advertisement yah..haha)
Young ppl fit?
Actually climbing up was ok for me. People were super friendly too. Was actually greeting every climber i saw good morning/chou san all along the way. Just that i was too sleepy due to the lack of sleep and i dislike some parts where there are lots of rocks and stones which to me honestly are quite dangerous. I had to keep looking down to see where i was stepping just in case i slipped. Seriously, people do slipped while climbing esp when it gets steep.
Lydia (my church sis) and my mom. Noticed my mom has a metal stick to help her. Yupp. The aunties (they actually climb the hill twice a week!!!) all had a metal stick with them which according to them helps alot. What is so pai seh is the elderly uncle and aunties could climb up faster than we young people. One of my church friend actually climbed halfway and gave up because she was too tired. Shows how fit young people are these days
With a thankful heart…
Enjoyment ends, battle begins
Poverty
Have been travelling along Vietnam for a few days and poverty is so evident in this country. Most of them are really really poor unless they work in the government office (only 1% of the population get this golden chance). Young and old are required to work everyday (no such thing as M.C, annual leave. You dont work one day, you have no pay for the day) because what they earn for each day is barely enough for the day (rice+vege only). Ppl only save money for the sick days. Hospitals and schools are not free here and even if you are dying and you have no money, you cant be treated!!! Hospitals sent you home to die. Hence norm ppl just leave their relatives to die at home because they cant afford to pay for the medical bills. Sad right?
Most children here receive education up to primary school only because their parents cant afford their school fees which gets more expansive when they come to high school. And they need to come out to work to support the family.
The primary school boys happily posing for the camera. They are very excited when you take their pictures. Most of them walk/ cycle to school (let me remind you that traffic here is really crazy and congested! traffic lights here are only for show) Yah when they see us foreigners, they would shout out aloud money!money!Too bad, we cant give because if we give to one, everyone will come.
See the elderly woman? The houses here are really run down and small. Houses here are really expansive and i was shocked to know that newly married couples can only afford to move into a room (in the city) and not a house because its impossible to afford even 1 tiny house. Most people that shift from the kampung to the city have to cramp into 1 room (16 square foot!) with 9 others (10 in a room) and they sleep on the floor without beds (more space)
People here just eat along the roadside with small stools. No proper table nor chair. Only foreigners like me, we visit the restaurants here.Their own local ppl can never afford such luxury and things here have become more expansive these few years. People are really struggling to survive each day. How lucky we are back in msia.So well fed and yet we still waste food.
Yupp this is their kampung side. Its really really undevelop and everyone works as farmer or for the woman (they work in factories everyday for 10 hours with only USD 40 a month!) Hard life can be seen through their faces.
Most of them stop education after primary school and work in factories. This is a place where they sew frame art pictures. Guys even have to do sewing! Everyone has to work every single day for their meal for the day (no rest day) and pray really hard that they do not fall sick. (hopsitals = very expansive and if they cant work, no pay for the day) There was this German medical student who did his intern in vietnam and he said, there was this man who walked into the hospital one day with a fracture arm and the doctor sent him away because he couldnt afford to pay and hence for 2 months he worked with 1 hand and finally after 2 mths he came back to the same hospital and gave the doctor the money to have his fracture arm treated!!!! No money = no treatment! Horrible.
We visited caves and managed to go for jungle tracking and i came across these few women with their children selling things in the sea hoping to get some income (when i was there, no one actually bought from them so i wonder how much they can actually get for the day). Its really pitiful. Rain, shine, children have no choice but to follow out the whole entire day in the sea.
Fishing village. Very small fishing village. Poverty is really seen so clearly here and people here really live such a hard life. If only hospitals here are free but not even a single one is free. Somehow it really touches my heart when i look around vietnam and observe how these people live their lives. Learning to be grateful for what i have in life…
A girl and her dad with their 2 dogs on the beach. This is where she grow up and spent most of her time without education just because education is not free.
Side track…haha….We make it!!! A rewarding expeience. The 3 of us (My MOM!!!! super fit lady, my church friend, Lydia and me) managed to climb to the peak of this hill though i nearly slipped and fell and Lydia wanted to give up halfway . The view was really really really beautiful from the top !!! Worth our climb
Hospital doctors cant speak eng!
Hehe writing from vietnam again…
Just got back from a super tiring 1 whole day tour. Visited their prision!!! Went for their famous night water puppet show. Very interesting. Never seen 1 before. Managed to record the entire water puppet show. Oh i "worked" part time here. Haha. This vietnamese guy/ staff bully me to give out flyers (information on the water puppet show) to foreigners just before the show started. We were all waiting outside. He passed me this whole stack and i felt so weird approaching ppl with the flyers till 1 foreigner started asking me something abt it, thinking i was the staff and i said, Oh so sorry i am a tourist myself. haha. That man!!! i gonna kill him and everyone in my grp laughed at me and the worst is ppl mistaken me as a vietnamese..nvm..haha.
Oh today what shocked me was the hospitals here. My mom wanted to buy medicine from their hospital and what annoyed me was the super tight security. Can you imagine we were blocked by their soldiers/security in front of the hospital entrance. Goodness me and when we finally get to see the doctors and nursers and told them that we wanted high blood pressure/ hypertension medicine, none of them could speak in english..my my..we finally gave up and left..haha.I really wonder how their doctors ever gonna work overseas.
Another thing here that i really feel trapped is their green soldiers everywhere. Will upload their pictures later when i get back. They are everywhere and they scare me with their long riffles and some even had sharp swords esp the ones at the museum. Their green uniform and green cap really make me feel like i am really in a communist country.Honestly they never smile (when they are on duty) and they are very very very strict but hehe behind those uniforms…i cant help but to say again and again that quite alot of them really look very cute/handsome/ smart. If only they speak english and learn to smile during their duties. haha. But our tour guide say that indirectly they are still under communist cause they helped to stabilise the country. Oh i took pictures of their flag too.Red flag with a yellow star in the middle. Yes! Typical communist flag. But my friend commented, we should feel safe cause they are everywhere. Haha. So far very safe
Oh i am getting use to the roads here too. We can actually cross without looking…the rule here is when you cross dont stop..just walk and the skillful motorcyclist and cars will avoid you….hard to believe but its true..just cross. You dont need to look to your left nor to your right but you must get use to the endless motorbikes zooming around you with their loud honk everywhere. Hopefully when i get back to KL, i will not cross in such manner or else….no more blogs. Haha
Oh yes! I love the food here!!! Vietnamese food are really good. Different and nice! Their fresh juices are really thick fresh fruits juice..pure fresh fruits and thank God, no one had any diarrhae so far. Actually more like i am having a little constipation now. Haha. Eating too much good food.
If only people here speak a little english. Honestly thats the hardest thing i find here so far. Communication barrier. The soldiers in the Ho chin minh museum scolded us in their own language today but haha we buat tak tau sahaja cause we couldnt understand what they were trying to tell us though we know they are angry with us..really so garang ppl…muahaha but thats the good part. You got excuse to buat tak tau…i tell you lol..they are very strict with their rules…..trapped ee yin here…Save me
Alright gonna end here. Need to bathe, pack my bag for our sea tour tomorrow. Yes tomorrow we are going for Halong Bay overnight boat experience. I really hope the rooms in the boat are clean. Somehow i have the feeling that its not going to be clean..hehe and yes! hopefully it would be a fine weather. I just love the cooling weather here. You wont sweat and you dont feel sticky. Its just cool breeze the whole day
Will upload the pictures after my final exams..
Tired ee yin signing out now. Hardly get to sleep these few days. When i study, i sleep so much but when it comes to holiday…i hardly sleep. Shows how lazy i am. Getting a sorethroat soon..i can feel it coming….goodnight everyone…
Vietnam flag..took me ages to take it cause the wind was so strong.
Somehow their flag amuzed me! So typical communist flag and i managed to pose with it during my halong bay boat experience. The weather here is super freezing esp when the wind blows, i also cannot tahan though i love airconds. haha.
At the airport during our arrival. See the green men in green cap. Yah i really felt the communist environment upon arrival and everyone in the airport was super quiet. No laughing, no talking, no smilling. What a welcome. haha. Getting use to it though.
We visited the Ho chi minh (Vietnam grandfather) museum (his actual body is preserved in there and the line was super long) Took us forever to enter with lots of guards surrounding us. So uncomfortable cause we were not allowed to talk and we have to walk 2 by 2 the whole entire time or else you get scolded.
See those green men with green caps again! When they shout at you or blow the whistle at you, oops it means you are in trouble. Haha.
See their sharp knives and serious faces? But after a few days, i am quite used to them around me already. As long you obey their rules, you are quite ok.
I wanted to stand next to them but my tour guide told me better not. haha. Its not like the english countries where you are free to take next to them. So ended up the tour guide took this for me. So kesian… Haha.
This is their traffic policeman
See the "green man with their green cap" again? haha…on the streets you find them everywhere. Not like msia, so much freedom.
Very thankful…
Writing from vietnam in my hotel room…
Haha suppose to be studying for my finals during this period of study break but ended up in vietnam with my church members. Hoepfully the dean doesnt read this all else he would ask me to leave school of medicine instantly
Poverty can be clearly seen here. As we travel along, we see families eating dinner with just a tiny candle and how back in KL, we use the air cond, fan and lights whenever we fill like it and when tenaga nasional or bekalan air cut them off a while, we start grumbling so hot!!! no water!!! Yah, they dont even have proper tables and chairs to eat and they can happily eat at the "kaki jalan" Back at home we complain yer… the drains so smelly, I dont want to eat that place so dirty and cacat. Their houses are really run down and small and yet that is what they call home. Women, young lady working in factories and their only mode of transport is bicycle and their 2 feets. Me back in KL? everywhere by car. Somehow seeing all these with my own eyes, put me to shame. I have been so blessed living in msia and yet at times, i still complain. Sigh…God pls forgive me.
Haha communication here is really hard…You try speaking in english with some sign languages here and there and the people just stare blankly at you. I never feel so helpless before. Thank God for a few young poeple that can speak english and not to mention they are very helpful too. Hehe there are some good looking, cute vietnamese guys..haha Kuria sis! good news for you
I guess the young people here are getting more educated and hence they do speak english. Phew…
Another thing i am not used to is their roads. Its pretty scary everytime i try crossing their roads…the cars and motorbikes are just everywhere…its like there is no proper road direction..and they zoom in and out between you and though people say just walk and dont stop because they will know how to avoid you, but i still cant get use to it. The road system here is really not organise but somehow quite true, you can close your eyes and walk and they will know how to avoid you. I did that but still it scares me esp their motorcyclist.
Food here? well i havent tried their road side food of the fear of having severe diarrhae but their proper restaurants and cafe food are good. Yah vietnam food are really nice and good..everyone agreed…different from back home. Not that cheap though as some go by USD and are pretty expansive. BTW their coffee shop environment is super diff from ours..its really uhm how to say..dont know how to say but its make me feel greatful that the coffeeshops back in KL are so much better and spacious and comfortable. Oh shopping yes! haha i managed to shop..of course with my mom emptying her wallet on me and my shopping..haha..thanks mom
Yet to come is the experience sleeping on the vietnam boat (junk) overnight in the sea. It would be this coming Thursday. Hopefully i wont get sea sick and yes no diarrhae pls. Me and my sensitive stomach. So far so good. Oh i love the weather here. Its spring here so its around 18-24 degrees Celcius. Nice cooling weather. The churches here? well they are super old and they are really antic and huge. Havent bump into any modern type..i mean the building.
Alright will end here. I just love the internet connection here. First they have internet and computer in each hotel room and seconds its super fast. Faster than the internet back home. Haha. Time to sleep as sun rises very early here, 5am and its dark by 6pm (1 hr slower that KL time) Guess this would be my last blog till final exam ends. Hopefully can pick up some vietnam words though they are supper hard to read nor pronnounce. Haha. Off to bed…Suze my dear sis, dont miss me yah and study hard….So thankful that Msia is so blessed and well develop
They have really nice handicraft work. We bought them!
Vietnamese food!!! Nice. Their food are really good and different! Very expansive though cause its the restaurant! haha. What to do, we are so afraid of diarrhae/food poisoning so we didnt dare try their roadsides uncovered food (seriously even meat/ bread/ fruit drinks can be sell at the roadside uncovered)

No more PBL…
Who say medical students are serious people? Honestly they are way opposite from that. Outside of the study circle, they are very fun and crazy people. Wonder why people wanna kena kumar? Time for revenge. haha
